Harmar AL435 Axis III Powered Inside-Vehicle Hoist

The AL435 is a three-axis hoist for loading a compatible manual wheelchair, power wheelchair or scooter into a vehicle. Harmar powers the lift, boom extension and rotation, so the device can be raised and moved into the cargo area without being carried through the full loading path by hand. It is rated for devices up to 400 lb. The lift is designed to work inside most SUVs, trucks and vans, and Harmar says its layout can preserve access to the backup camera. The key trade-off is vehicle-specific fit: reach, door opening and interior geometry determine whether the lift can serve the device safely.

Check the Vehicle and Device Together

Compare the mobility device's weight, length, width and height with the vehicle opening and the AL435's available lift path. Check the cargo area's depth, ceiling clearance and the space needed for the boom to extend and rotate. A vehicle category such as SUV or van is not enough to establish fit; interior trim, seats and mounting position can alter the usable area. Harmar recommends confirming the specific vehicle and device with a dealer before ordering.

Understand the Three Powered Movements

The lift's vertical movement, boom extension and rotation support a staged loading path from beside the vehicle into the cargo area. Follow the AL435 manual for the correct operating sequence, attachment and securement method. Keep the device unoccupied during lifting and transport; the hoist is for the mobility device, not a person. Do not assume the same attachment or securement accessory works for every chair or scooter. Confirm the required interface and hardware for the exact device.

Plan Interior Space and Access

Because the AL435 stores the device inside the vehicle, it uses cargo-area space that may otherwise be needed for luggage or other equipment. Map where the chair or scooter rests after loading, how passengers enter and sit, and whether the lift or device blocks access to storage, seat adjustment or other controls. Harmar's camera-access statement is a design feature, not a substitute for checking actual visibility and clearance in the installed vehicle.

Capacity and Installation

The 400 lb rating is the lift's maximum device capacity; verify that the device's weight is within that limit and that the vehicle and mounting structure can support the installed system. Installation is vehicle-specific. Have a Harmar dealer confirm the mounting location, floor/structure requirements, clearances, power connection and compatible device attachment before purchase. The vehicle's own payload and loading instructions still apply.

Provide the dealer with the vehicle year and model, the mobility device model and its dimensions, and any seat or accessory configuration that affects its footprint. Ask for confirmation of the lift path, attachment parts, safe working load and installation requirements. The AL435 is most useful when its powered lifting, extension and rotation match the actual vehicle interior and the user's loading routine.
