Karman KM-5000 Reclining Manual Wheelchair

The KM-5000 is a folding manual wheelchair with a reclining back that moves from 90 to 163 degrees. Reclining is operated by an attendant using the handles behind the back; this is not an independently operated power recliner. The aluminum frame, anti-tippers and removable armrests support a transport and care setup, while the reclining mechanism changes how the user is positioned and how the chair must be handled during transfers.

The available seat widths are 16, 18, 20 and 22 inches, with seat depths of 17 or 18 inches. The listed capacities vary by configuration: 250 lb for 16- and 18-inch widths, 300 lb for the 20-inch model and 350 lb for the 22-inch model. Karman lists 36 lb without riggings for 16/18-inch versions and 38 lb without riggings for 20/22-inch versions. Confirm the exact seat-width, capacity and weight combination before ordering; attached footrests and other riggings increase the complete chair's lifting weight.

Recline and Support Components

The back reclines while an attendant controls the movement. Anti-tippers are listed for the model, and detachable armrests, swing-away elevating legrests, adjustable leg supports and a head pillow are described. Use the reclining function and supports according to the manual and the user's care plan. The user should not attempt to recline or transfer without appropriate assistance when the procedure requires an attendant.

Folded Transport and Clearance

The frame folds and the backrest folds down for storage. Open width increases with seat size, from 25 inches for 16-inch seating to 31 inches for 22-inch seating; the seat width and overall width are not interchangeable measurements. Measure the vehicle opening and cargo area for the selected model, and plan to handle the wheelchair with its riggings attached or removed as instructed.
