Karman XO-202 Stand-Up Electric Wheelchair
The Karman XO-202 brings powered seated mobility and supported standing into one electric wheelchair. It is designed for someone who needs a full-size power chair and wants a standing function as part of an individually assessed positioning routine. The powered mechanism changes the user's position without requiring a move to a separate standing frame, while the wheelchair's drive system handles everyday seated travel.
That combination also makes fit and setup especially important. This is not simply a conventional wheelchair with a higher seat: the footrests, knee support and body supports must work together throughout the change in position. Karman instructs users to consult their doctor or physical therapist before using the standing function. Whether standing is appropriate, how much assistance is needed and the suitable positioning routine depend on the individual.
Powered Mobility and Position Changes
The XO-202 uses an armrest-mounted joystick control system for powered mobility and seat-function operation. Its controls provide a way to select driving or positioning functions rather than relying on a caregiver to manually raise the chair. Take time to become familiar with the supplied controller and its operating modes before using the chair in a busy room or confined space.
Standing should not be treated as another normal driving position. The owner's manual describes the raised position as stationary positioning, not simultaneous driving. Return to a seated position for ordinary travel, and follow the manual's specific restrictions for obstacles, ramps and gradients.
Seating Fit and Adjustable Support
Karman specifies a maximum user weight of 250 pounds. Seat width and depth must match the configuration being ordered, while backrest height, armrest height and footrest position need to suit the rider's proportions. Height- and angle-adjustable footrests help establish foot placement, and the padded seat and backrest provide the seating surface for everyday use.
These adjustments affect more than seated comfort. Foot support and cushion height influence alignment as the chair rises, so changing a cushion or making a mechanical adjustment can require the positioning setup to be reassessed. Have fitting and mechanism adjustments handled by qualified personnel rather than assuming a comfortable seated fit automatically provides a suitable standing fit.
Standing Safety and Daily Use
The knee support, safety belt and chest belt are essential parts of the standing system. Karman requires them to be correctly fitted and secured before standing, with the user's feet properly positioned on the footplates. These supports help maintain the intended body position; they do not replace clinical assessment or any assistance the rider needs.
Use the chair on hard, even surfaces and avoid wet surfaces as directed in the manual. Do not use the raised position on uneven ground, slopes or obstacles. Keep hands away from the moving standing mechanism and make sure children and other people are clear of it during position changes.
Batteries, Charging and Range
The XO-202 uses two 12-volt batteries. Karman advertises a range of up to 25 miles per charge, but that is a maximum reference rather than a guaranteed distance for every rider or route. Rider load, surface conditions, battery condition and available charge affect practical travel planning, so allow a reserve instead of planning a trip around the full advertised distance.
Use the manufacturer-supplied charger and follow the charging instructions for the equipment delivered with the chair. The manual directs users to rely on the charger's indication of a full charge, not just the controller's approximate battery gauge. Establish a charging location where the chair can remain stationary and the charger and cables can be used safely.
Handling and Vehicle Transport
The aluminum frame does not make this a lightweight folding travel chair. Batteries, the drive system and the standing mechanism all matter when planning transport. Confirm the chair's actual ready-to-travel weight, dimensions and vehicle-loading requirements before selecting a ramp, lift or carrier. Never lift the wheelchair by its detachable flip-back armrests.
The XO-202 is best considered when supported standing and adjustable positioning are priorities alongside seated power mobility. Its trade-off is the need for careful fitting, safe operating space and a suitable transport arrangement. If frequent lifting into a car is the main requirement, compare those handling needs with the benefits of the standing system before choosing a configuration.
