Harmar AL690 Side Door Hybrid Platform Lift

The AL690 is a vehicle-integrated lift designed to load a compatible power wheelchair or scooter through a van's side door and carry it inside near the second-row seating. Harmar says this arrangement can leave third-row seating and rear cargo space available and preserve access to the backup camera. The mobility device rides unoccupied and is secured with manual straps. This is a different setup from an exterior hitch carrier: vehicle interior space and installation compatibility determine whether it can work.

Capacity and Device Fit

The AL690 is rated for mobility devices up to 275 lb. Compare the device's actual weight, width, length, wheelbase and loading points with the lift and van interior; capacity alone does not establish that the device will fit the opening or be secured correctly. The vehicle seat layout, door opening, interior trim and position of the second row all affect the available path. Confirm clearance through the door and the final parked position before choosing the lift.

Loading and Securement

Side loading brings the device into the vehicle's seating area rather than placing it on an outside platform. Once loaded, the device must be secured with the supplied manual straps according to the AL690 instructions. Follow the lift and mobility-device manuals for the loading sequence, tie-down points and travel checks. The lift transports the unoccupied mobility device; it is not designed to carry a person while raising or during vehicle travel.

Vehicle-Specific Installation

Harmar describes the AL690 as compatible with most minivans and vans, not every vehicle. Installation depends on the specific floor structure, seat attachment points, door geometry and clearance beneath the vehicle. Harmar notes that some installations may use existing seat attachment points, while others may require drilling into the floor. Underbody components and the planned mounting position must be checked by a qualified installer before work begins.

Consider how the lift affects passenger seating, rear cargo, seat movement, door operation, lights and the backup camera.
