Pride Maxima SC941 4-Wheel Mobility Scooter
This FDA Class II medical device is designed to aid individuals with mobility impairments. Specifications may change, and speed and range vary with rider load, terrain and battery condition. HCPCS references do not guarantee reimbursement.
Capacity and fit take precedence over portability
The four-wheel Maxima SC941 is intended for riders who need a 500-pound carrying capacity and a more substantial seating area than compact travel scooters provide. Its depth-adjustable high-back seat is the main reason to evaluate it, alongside the heavy-duty chassis. This is not a travel scooter whose weight can be reduced to a small front section for ordinary trunk loading.
The 47.5-inch length and 27-inch base width need meaningful storage and access space. Turning radius is 53 inches, wider than the three-wheel Maxima's 49 inches. Compare both the four-wheel footprint and the turning area with the route through the home, elevator or destination. A doorway that admits the scooter may still lead into a corner where maneuvering is difficult.
A non-disassembling base changes the vehicle plan
Pride lists 196.8 pounds without batteries. The two specified batteries add approximately 36.5 pounds each, and the unit does not separate into travel-sized frame sections. Removing serviceable components does not make it equivalent to a lightweight disassembling scooter. The correct transport question is usually which lift or rated loading system can accommodate the assembled configuration, not whether the owner can manage one quoted heaviest piece.
Allow for the actual seat, battery setup and accessories when selecting vehicle equipment. The wider seat and sturdy platform can be worthwhile, but they require sufficient cargo space and rated lifting capacity. Plan a charging location near the regular parking position as well. If the scooter will remain mainly at home or travel in a suitably equipped vehicle, the ownership compromise is very different from repeated manual loading for short errands.
A wider cushion that can be adjusted for leg support
The standard seat is 22 inches wide with depth adjustable between 18 and 20 inches. The high back, limited recline, adjustable headrest and swivel provide more positioning flexibility than a small folding travel seat. Use the depth adjustment to support the thighs without forcing the rider forward to reach the tiller or leaving the feet poorly positioned on the deck.
Seat-to-deck height is adjustable from 17.13 to 19.13 inches in the standard arrangement. A power-elevating seat is an optional configuration, not a feature supplied on every Maxima. The infinite-position tiller lever and ergonomic wraparound delta handles help set steering reach to match the seated position. Fit should be evaluated as a complete posture, including transfer access and hand comfort, rather than inferred from the capacity rating alone.
Battery reserve and deliberate control use
The specified battery system uses two 58Ah NF-22 gel batteries with a 5-amp off-board charger. Range is published at up to 19.5 miles, with speed up to 5.8 mph. These are the four-wheel model's figures, not the slightly different three-wheel results. Load, slopes, repeated acceleration and battery condition all affect the distance available during a particular outing.
A tiller-mounted charging connection makes plugging in more accessible than reaching down to the battery compartment. Releasing the throttle engages the brakes; the manual freewheel lever allows pushing with the braking system disengaged and must be returned to drive mode before use. Practice the stop response and low-speed reverse in an open area. Heavy-duty capacity does not remove the need for a conservative pace near pedestrians or tight turns.
Substantial equipment with a firm-riding chassis
Pride identifies a full LED lighting package with headlights, directional signals and rear taillights, together with a front basket, rearview mirror and seatbelt in the model description. These are useful everyday details, while additional holders or elevated seating are separate choices. Lighting and mirrors assist awareness; they do not make every outdoor route appropriate or replace checking behind before maneuvering.
The non-scuffing solid tires remove routine inflation checks, but the scooter has no suspension. Motor clearance is 2.25 inches, so broad seating and heavy-duty branding should not be read as off-road capability. Maintained paved paths, accessible entrances and level indoor routes let the chassis work within its intended strengths. The four-wheel Maxima is a strong candidate when generous adjustable seating and capacity matter most, provided the buyer accepts its turning space, firm ride and need for properly rated transport equipment.
