The AL580XL is the larger-wheel version of Harmar's powered AL580 hitch-lift series. It is designed for compatible mid-wheel-drive powerchairs with 14-inch drive wheels and supports devices up to 350 lb. The platform lifts and folds under power; a padded hold-down arm and wheel cradle secure the chair without straps or modifications to the wheelchair. The standard AL580 is intended for mid-wheel chairs with 10-inch drive wheels, so identifying the correct drive-wheel size is central to choosing between the two models.

Match the Chair to the Lift

Check the powerchair's model, drive-wheel diameter, total weight, wheelbase, frame shape and securement area. The AL580XL's 17.5 x 27 inch platform and 350 lb capacity are part of the fit check, not a guarantee that every 14-inch mid-wheel chair will fit. Verify that the cradle supports the chair's drive wheels and that the hold-down arm reaches an appropriate contact point. Do not substitute the standard AL580 for a chair with 14-inch drive wheels without Harmar's confirmation.

Powered Loading and Stowage

The AL580XL raises the powerchair and folds the empty platform toward the vehicle. Follow the manual for loading, wheel placement, hold-down-arm positioning, travel checks and unloading. The device must be unoccupied while the lift operates and during vehicle travel. A powered sequence reduces manual lifting, but the chair still has to be aligned and secured correctly on the platform.

Vehicle, Hitch and Rear Clearance

Harmar lists minivans, SUVs, trucks and vans as vehicle categories; the exact vehicle and hitch must still be confirmed. Check receiver compatibility, lift and hitch ratings, tongue weight, vehicle payload and ground clearance with a Harmar dealer or the vehicle calculator. Count the lift, powerchair, passengers and cargo together. Consider rear overhang when backing, parking and entering a garage. A swing-away option is available for some installations, but its compatibility is vehicle-specific.

Accessories and Purchase Checks

The product configuration offers mounting-type choices and optional accessories, including a battery pack and camera systems. Confirm which items are included in the selected price and whether an option is required for the vehicle, device or intended use. If a camera system is added, check its compatibility and monitor arrangement. Do not assume that an accessory shown in product images is part of the base lift.
