Golden Companion GC440: Full-Size Four-Wheel Mobility with Suspension
The Golden Companion GC440 combines a full-size four-wheel chassis with front and rear suspension, a sliding swivel seat and an adjustable delta tiller. It is a useful format for regular errands and visits when riding position and supportive everyday equipment matter more than obtaining the smallest possible loading package. Its disassembly features help with transport, but it should not be mistaken for a lightweight folding travel scooter.
Golden rates the GC440 for a 400 lb capacity. That is a load limit rather than a guarantee that its standard seat accommodates every rider below the rating. Assess the seat, control reach and transfer arrangement separately. This evaluation concerns the four-wheel GC440, not the three-wheel Companion or the separate Companion HD platform.
Space for the Ride and the Turn
The manufacturer lists a 48-inch length and 24.5-inch width, with a 56-inch turning radius. Those figures help define where the Companion can be used, parked and charged. A doorway may admit it in a straight line without providing enough space beyond the opening to turn around. Check hallway corners and furniture approaches as well as the nominal doorway width.
Maximum speed is listed at up to 5 mph, with electronic speed control to set a suitable pace. Use a low setting in confined spaces or near pedestrians, and allow room for the rear wheels when turning. The four-wheel layout does not establish immunity to tipping or permission to turn sharply across an incline.
A Sliding Swivel Seat with a Compact Cushion
The standard high-back stadium-style seat has an 18-inch-wide, 16-inch-deep cushion and quilted padding. Swivel access can help position the seat for boarding, while the sliding adjustment changes the relationship between the cushion and the tiller. Compare cushion depth with thigh support and make sure the feet can rest appropriately on the deck.
Seat height has three settings in one-inch increments, with a seat-to-deck range of approximately 17 to 19 inches. Set the seat and tiller together rather than treating each adjustment as an isolated choice. The manufacturer identifies alternative seating, including a larger stadium-style seat and elevating-seat options; those are separate selections, not automatically included because this is a full-size scooter.
Disassembly Helps Packing, Not Every Lift
The seat, batteries and front and rear sections can be handled separately during transport preparation. This gives the owner a different loading routine from placing the entire assembled scooter into a vehicle. Each part still needs a suitable grip, enough working space and a lift that the user or assistant can comfortably manage.
Golden lists an assembled weight of 222 lbs. Do not treat disassembly as proof that the remaining main sections are negligible loads, or use that reference as the weight of every optional seat and battery package. Compare the vehicle opening, loading height and actual selected components. A compatible lift or accessible vehicle arrangement may be more practical for repeated outings than relying on manual handling.
Battery Options and Accessible Charging
The standard configuration uses two U1 batteries, while an optional battery arrangement of up to 50Ah is available for extended use. The larger package should be selected deliberately; it is not included simply because another Companion advertisement discusses longer-distance travel. Battery condition and the chosen package both affect the practical outing plan.
A 3.5-amp off-board charger and tiller charging access are part of the manufacturer's equipment description. Arrange a dry, accessible charging location near the regular parking space. Leave a return reserve rather than treating a published distance as a guarantee: rider load, surface, temperature, gradients and repeated starts all affect usable range.
Digital Controls and Everyday Equipment
The infinitely adjustable delta tiller has a digital dashboard with a percentage battery indicator and water-resistant buttons. Set its angle so the rider can reach the controls without leaning away from the backrest. A percentage display is a useful charge reference, not a precise prediction of miles remaining under every route condition.
The tiller also includes a USB charging port and drink holders. A front basket and front and rear lighting support ordinary outings, but carried items must not interfere with steering or transfer space. Lighting does not confer road priority, and water-resistant controls do not make the scooter suitable for immersion or unrestricted exposure to bad weather.
Suspension, Tires and Suitable Surfaces
Front and rear suspension can soften ordinary paving irregularities. The standard 10.75-inch solid, non-marking tires avoid routine inflation checks, while still requiring inspection for wear and damage. They are a maintenance choice, not a promise that broken paving or loose terrain will be comfortable.
Under-deck clearance is listed at 4.25 inches, but the motor/transaxle clearance is 2.5 inches. The higher measurement should not be used as an obstacle-climbing allowance. The GC440 makes the most sense when its adjustable riding position and suspended full-size platform fit the route, with a proportionate storage and transport plan in place.
