The Golden Companion GC240 occupies a useful middle ground between a small car-travel scooter and a larger everyday riding platform. Its relatively short chassis and three-wheel steering suit indoor maneuvering, while U1 batteries and a sliding high-back seat make it worth considering for regular outings rather than only occasional transport. Golden calls it a mid-size Companion. The distinction matters: this model should not be assigned the full-size GC340's suspension, capacity or optional larger battery specifications simply because both scooters share the Companion name.

A Shorter Platform for Everyday Indoor Access

The GC240 measures 42.25 inches long and 24 inches wide, with a 37-inch turning radius. That radius is useful when comparing approaches to room entrances, dining areas or retail fixtures. Width still deserves attention, particularly where a hallway contains furniture or a doorway opens inward. Measure the whole maneuver rather than deciding from the clear doorway width alone. The maximum speed is 5 mph, with electronic speed control for a slower indoor pace.

A wraparound Delta tiller and easy-reach adjustment let the controls be positioned around the rider. The tiller includes a locking mechanism, and the battery gauge is displayed at the control panel. During fitting, try steering while seated instead of judging reach from beside the scooter. A three-wheel layout benefits maneuverability, but turns should still be taken carefully, especially where a route has a sideways slope or a change in surface height.

A Sliding Seat Helps Refine the Riding Position

The current standard quilted high-back seat has an 18-inch-wide, 16-inch-deep cushion and an 18-inch back. That is a meaningful lifting task and is more informative for planning manual loading than the portability label alone.

A vehicle loading assessment should include the seat and both batteries as well as the main section. Check cargo height, the distance the loader must reach into the vehicle, and where parts can be placed without obstructing the driver or passengers. Practice the reconnection procedure on a level surface before traveling. If daily lifting is unrealistic, a suitable lift can make more sense than repeatedly dismantling a scooter selected primarily for its riding fit.

Battery Planning and the Right Surface

The linked GC240 sell sheet specifies two U1 batteries and an operating range of up to 15 miles. Distance varies with rider weight, drive surface and terrain, so retain a reserve for the return journey rather than planning to consume the entire rated range. The portable 3.5 amp off-board charger should be used according to the supplied instructions. Establish a charging location that works with the scooter's normal parking arrangement before making it part of a daily routine.

The solid, non-marking tires measure 9 inches at the front and 10.75 inches at the rear. Clearance is 3.75 inches under the deck but 2.5 inches at the motor/transaxle; the lower point matters when assessing uneven transitions. These figures do not establish a curb-climbing allowance. Choose firm accessible surfaces and avoid treating a mid-size scooter as equipment for deep gravel or heavily broken paths.
