Harmar AL560 Powered Hitch-Mount Powerchair Lift

The AL560 is an exterior hitch-mounted lift for carrying an unoccupied power wheelchair behind a vehicle. Harmar's powered system raises and folds the platform, and a padded hold-down arm secures the chair without modifications to the wheelchair. The lift is rated for powerchairs up to 350 lb. This arrangement avoids using the vehicle's interior cargo area, but adds a substantial load and length behind the vehicle; hitch, vehicle and clearance checks are essential before choosing it.

Check the Powerchair and Securement

Compare the chair's actual weight and footprint with the AL560's 350 lb limit and platform configuration. Harmar describes the padded hold-down arm as the securement method for compatible powerchairs, without modifying the chair. Confirm that the arm can contact the correct part of the selected chair and that the platform supports its wheelbase and dimensions. The rating alone does not establish compatibility with every powerchair.

Powered Lifting, Folding and Rear Access

The lift raises the chair for travel and folds when not carrying it. Follow the AL560 manual for loading, securement, lift operation and travel checks; the chair must be unoccupied during these steps and while in transit. A swing-away option is available for some vehicle setups, but Harmar requires fit confirmation. Check how the lift and loaded chair affect access to a hatch or tailgate, rear lights, license plate, backup camera and garage clearance.

Vehicle and Hitch Ratings

Harmar lists compatibility with minivans, SUVs, trucks and vans, but installation depends on the specific vehicle, hitch receiver and chair. Confirm receiver fit, lift and hitch ratings, vehicle payload, tongue weight and ground clearance with Harmar's calculator or a dealer. Include the lift, powerchair, passengers and cargo in the vehicle's load calculations. A compatible receiver opening does not guarantee that the vehicle can carry the complete setup.

Plan the Daily Loading Routine

Measure the parking area, driveway and garage entrance with the lift both raised and stowed. The added rear length can affect backing, parking and turning even when the platform is folded. Check that the user or caregiver can operate the controls and secure the chair as directed. The padded hold-down arm can simplify the securement routine, but it does not eliminate the need to confirm the correct contact point and follow the manual.
