Harmar AL580 Next Generation Powerchair Hitch Lift

The standard AL580 is an exterior hitch-mounted lift for compatible mid-wheel-drive powerchairs with 10-inch drive wheels. Harmar rates it for devices up to 350 lb. Its powered platform lifts and folds, while a padded hold-down arm secures the chair without requiring modifications to the wheelchair. This can simplify the loading routine for a matching powerchair, but the lift is not universal: wheel size, chair geometry, receiver and vehicle ratings all need to match.

Confirm the Powerchair Version

Harmar distinguishes the standard AL580 for 10-inch drive wheels from the AL580XL for 14-inch drive wheels. Identify the chair's actual drive-wheel size and model before choosing between them. Compare the wheelchair's weight, wheelbase, frame shape and securement area with the lift's platform and hold-down arm. A chair within the 350 lb limit can still be incompatible if the wheel or frame geometry does not line up with the lift.

Powered Lift and Securement

The AL580 raises the platform and folds it when not carrying a chair. The padded hold-down arm is designed to secure compatible powerchairs without modifying the mobility device. Follow the AL580 manual for positioning, arm contact, lift operation and travel checks. Transport the wheelchair unoccupied, and do not rely on the arm rating or lift capacity in place of proper positioning and the manufacturer's securement instructions.

Check the Vehicle and Hitch Together

Harmar lists minivans, SUVs, trucks and vans as vehicle categories, but the specific combination must be checked. Confirm receiver size, hitch and vehicle ratings, tongue weight, ground clearance and the chair's clearance path with the Harmar calculator or a dealer. The lift and chair add weight behind the vehicle; include passengers and cargo in the vehicle's payload calculation. A receiver that fits the shank does not establish that the complete load is within the vehicle's rating.

A swing-away option is available for some setups. Its fit and operation depend on the vehicle and installation; confirm compatibility before relying on it for hatch access. Also consider rear length when backing, parking or entering a garage, including when the platform is folded.

Before Ordering

Provide the dealer with the powerchair model, drive-wheel size and weight, plus the vehicle year/model and hitch details. Ask for confirmation of platform fit, hold-down-arm placement, swing-away compatibility and installation requirements. Follow the owner's manual for loading and travel; the AL580 carries an unoccupied powerchair and is not a passenger lift.
