3 Position Lift Chairs

What is a 3 position lift chair?

This is a type of power lift chair that is capable of three different positions in addition to the standard seated position. The first position is the lifted position. This position is shared by all lift chairs and assists the user with getting in and out of the recliner by rising and tilting slightly forward. The second position is a partial recline, sometimes called the “reading position”. Following that is the third position, a full recline or “napping position”.

While similar in design to a standard recliner, a power lift recliner offers unique benefits that cannot be found in a regular chair. The lifted position makes a huge difference if you find it difficult to go from standing to sitting in a chair and vice versa. Regardless of how comfortable a recliner is, if it is a challenge to even sit in it’s not very helpful. Using a power lift chair eliminates this difficulty, letting you relax easily whenever you want to without assistance. A 3-position power lift chair takes the comfort you would get from a high-end recliner and adds the convenience of the lifting mechanism to aid you with sitting down and standing up. With a 3 position lift chair you can stay independent and stay comfortable.

How does a 3 position lift chair work?

A three-position lift recliner operates through the use of a single motor. This motor controls the back and leg rest of the chair at the same time. As the back of the chair reclines, the leg rest raises and as the back comes upwards the leg rest lowers. This same motor is also responsible for bringing the recliner to the lifted position and back down to the seated position. All of this happens through the use of a simple remote control.

One of the biggest advantages that three position lift chairs have over other types of chairs is their ease of use. They are operated with a remote control that has a straightforward and easy to understand button layout. Most controls will have just two buttons, up and down. Use the up button to bring the chair from the sitting position to the lifted, use the down button to bring it back to the sitting position. From there, use the remote to recline the chair and bring it back up. When you are ready to stand just use the up button to go to the lifted position. Chairs with upgraded features, such as heat and massage, will have additional buttons that clearly indicate which features they control.

How do I know which 3-position power lift recliner to buy?

So, you have decided on buying a lift chair and narrowed it down to a three position but, there are still so many options. How do you know which one is right for you? While there is no concrete answer that applies to all of us there are a few things to keep in mind that will help you find the perfect three position lift chair.

Always consider the size of the room your lift chair will go in. Power recliners come in different heights, widths, and depths (distance from front to back) and it is important to make sure it will fit in the space you have. In addition to the specific dimensions, lift chair size can be designated by broader terms like small, medium, large, bariatric, etc. These chairs may also provide a recommended user height. For example, most small chairs are intended for individuals 5’4” and below while large chairs are typically for people 6 foot and above. There is no official industry consensus on exactly what size chair is best for what height but, these general guidelines can help you make a more informed decision. Weight capacity needs to be factored in as well. It is best to purchase a chair that has a maximum weight capacity that is above your weight, not the same as it. Keep in mind the amount of distance from the wall your chair requires to fully recline. Each of our product listings contains detailed specifications of the product, including the dimensions and required distance from the wall.

Many of our three position power recliners have optional upgrades and accessories available. These can help you further customize your chair to meet your needs even better. Heat and massage features, additional pillows, wireless remotes, cleaning kits, backup batteries and more can be purchased with your lift chair. Optional features and accessories will vary between manufacturers and models.

Two things to keep in mind when picking a fabric type are what feels most comfortable to you and the level of wear you think your near will experience. Our lift chairs come in a range of fabrics and textures, from soft polyblends to smooth leather. If you are going to be the only one using it you should be fine with whichever fabric type you prefer. Do you have kids, grandkids, or pets? You may want to look into something stain-resistant.

While it isn’t mandatory, most people try to choose a fabric color that matches their tastes and the space their new lift chair will be in. Think about how the room your power lift chair is going into looks. Are there lots of dark, rich tones or lighter pastel colors? Is this a bright living room with lots of windows or more of a cozy study or den? When you are picking out your lift recliner try to find a fabric color that fits the decor and your style. There is no rule that says just because your furniture is functional it can’t look great too.

At first glance, a 3-position lift chair might look like a normal recliner. Even though they are similar in design 3 position lift chairs offer features that no standard recliner can match. These chairs are designed to help anyone with mobility challenges go from standing to kicking back and relaxing painlessly and safely.
